With Malaysia’s rapid urbanisation, existing underground utilities are becoming increasingly complex. Beneath our roads, buildings, and open spaces lie networks of water pipes, electrical lines, telecommunication cables, gas pipelines, and sewer systems.
Damaging these during construction or maintenance isn’t just costly, it can be dangerous, disruptive, and lead to long project delays. Whether it’s for infrastructure upgrades, new developments, or asset management, accurate Utility Mapping is essential for risk reduction and efficient planning.
What is Utility Mapping?
Utility Mapping is the process of locating and identifying underground services using non-destructive technologies such as Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electromagnetic (EM) detection.
At Sonicon, we use these methods by Xradar™ to determine the location, nature, depth, orientation, material, and dimensions of underground utilities. The results are compiled into accurate as-built drawings or 3D models for easy integration into project planning and execution.
How Does it Works?
Our process combines advanced detection equipment with trained interpretation to build a complete picture of the underground environment.
- GPR sends radar pulses into the ground and reads the reflections to detect buried objects or changes in material.
- EM detection traces conductive utilities like electrical cables or metal pipes.
The data is processed to produce clear, actionable reports, available in AutoCAD, Revit, or even 3D virtual walkthrough formats for design and coordination.
Applications of Utility Mapping
Utility Mapping supports a wide range of projects, including:
- Pre-construction Planning: Ensuring new infrastructure can integrate safely with existing networks.
- Repairs & Maintenance: Locating services before excavation to prevent accidental strikes.
- Asset Management: Creating or updating records for better facility planning.
- Risk Management: Reducing safety hazards and avoiding costly service disruptions.
Our Utility Mapping service goes beyond detection, we provide interpretation, reporting, and integration into your project workflow. Whether confirming the accuracy of old drawings or updating them with verified locations, our approach helps clients work faster, safer, and smarter.
From large-scale infrastructure to small private developments, we deliver the underground clarity you need to keep your project moving without unnecessary risks or delays.
